A mere 2-stars for me. The story sounded great and the reviews that I read were promising, but Shattered simply didn't do it for me. Jay is a former detective who questions his courage and response in a life-altering situation involving his sister; something that occurred 3-years ago. Tess is the woman he loved, but whom he drove away in the aftermath of that tragedy. Tess goes off to the other side of South Dakota while Jay becomes essentially a recluse on the ranch he works with his father, Tom. Fast forward to current day and in circumstances that seem beyond remotely plausible, Tess ends up as a pawn in avenging the situation from 3-years ago. Who does she reach out to for help? The man who drove her away. Of course.Their romance didn't engage me. Issues for me include repeated references to Tess' strength and ability to be a partner to Jay which seems very much at odds with her landing at his ranch in the first place and contributing little more than good dinners once she arrives. A bigger issue is the idea that in the middle of what is a major mess in her life Tess and Jay "need to get away for a few hours". Really? If someone was after me will ill intent, I don't think that I'd ponder a brief trip to take my mind off of it. I think that every brain cell would be solely focused on catching the bad guys. And then there's the way that Jay talks to her from time to time which borders on condescending. While I like the alpha male concept, let's have some respect for the woman you're supposed to be all twisty about. Being frustrated because your investigation has hit a roadblock doesn't entitle you to talk down to your 'partner'. Finally (and I can't say much about this without giving something away) murders are typically big news and media outlets tend to pick up on those stories and include pictures of the perpetrators. If you've read the book, you'll know where I'm headed.
To end my thoughts on a high note, the author did keep me guessing about who the bad guy was. I went back and forth between the two most likely culprits and while I ultimately got it right, the twists and turns kept me guessing. I just wish that Shattered had more in the plus column.

Shattered Western Romance edition by Kate Kelly Romance eBooks Reviews
I loved this book! The entire time I was trying to guess who the killer was! The romance was there, the mystery kept me interested and not able to put the boom down!
Although it was readable, I found myself telling the main characters who they should be chasing. A slightly frustrating read in that respect, predictable. But an easy sort of holiday read with a bit of the sexual heat required.
I enjoyed this story for the most part. The characters were likable, the plot moved and the writing was good enough. Too many repetitive, telling comments about the leads' feelings toward each other slowed the story's pace, and the leads came off as a little juvenile at times, but all in all, not a bad read. 4 stars.
Well crafted story involving guns and horses, two of my favorite hobbies.
When the wife and I sold our horse ranch in New Mexico my wife told me
I had shoveled enough horse manure to be titled a " Manure Connoisseur "

I liked this book. Lots of action and suspense throughout along with romance too. Two stubborn people in love and trying to stay alive. The other characters in the book were interesting too. I just wanted to "bop" some of them on the head and get them to pay attention and go after what they wanted and needed. I did not want to put it down until it was finished. Great Read!
Having spent time in South Dakota, I was interested in a novel set in that area. The author combines suspense, romance, and an authentic location for all the action. I kept trying to guess who the killer was and kept getting surpised until the very end. I mentally told the heroine not to trust various characters until there were few that were on the trustworthy list. If you like romance and mysteries combined, give this book a try. How can you miss?
SHATTERED is one of those books you hate to put down to go to work or go to sleep. I was grabbed right away by the H&h, Jay and Tess, and their chemistry is palpable. (I love me a brooding, wounded cop, and this one has retired to ranching life, so he's a cowboy, too!) The mystery kept me guessing to the very last moment. This is definitely an author to check out. Her voice and her unique turn of phrase really elevate her stories, in my opinion.
